Dr. Conrad Hughes - Education Thought Leader

Conrad Hughes (PhD, EdD) is a chief executive, author, educational leader who serves as head of school for the International School of Los Angeles. He provides strategic, academic, and operational leadership while also contributing to educational research and thought leadership. Dr. Conrad Hughes’ published works examine topics including artificial intelligence in education, critical thinking, inclusive assessment, educational leadership, prejudice, and curriculum development. He has contributed books, peer-reviewed articles, and publications for organizations such as UNESCO, the World Economic Forum, and The Conversation. His recent work explores how generative artificial intelligence can support learning while reinforcing the importance of critical thinking, sound pedagogy, and meaningful assessment.

Dr. Hughes’ leadership philosophy is closely connected to his educational research. He previously served as the director general at the International School of Geneva, where he led initiatives that introduced a Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy. He further redesigned professional growth around coaching, implemented the Learner Passport as an alternative student transcript, and helped shape the foundation's long-term strategic plan. He has also advocated for widening student assessment so that schools recognize a broader range of student achievements and talents.

Dr. Hughes’ contributions have earned international recognition. In 2022, he was named a UNESCO Senior Fellow. He was appointed professor in practice at Durham University's School of Education in 2024, received the International Schools Association International Humanism Award the same year, and was recognized as one of the leading voices in the international schools field in 2025.
